Images of covers from my large collection of magazines with comments as appropriate. Mostly 20th Century and ranging from Aircraft to Zombies but including quite a lot of film and TV publications. New posts on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
The Strand magazine ran from 1891 until 1950 and is most
famous for introducing the world to Sherlock Holmes in their serialization of
‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ in 1901. Right from the start the covers usually featured some variation on this view of the Strand looking east towards the Aldwych. That's the spire of St Clement Danes Church growing out of the bowler hat. I don't know what that sandwich-board man is on but I want some.
The picture certainly matches the film title. Was it a
horror film in which Jennifer Jones plays a psychotic nurse who rips Rock
Hudson’s arms off while he gazes lovingly into her eyes? Actually it was a WWI
love story based on the autobiographical novel by Ernest Hemmingway.
